The GHR Programme builds on existing expertise within the UK and the wider global health research community to commission and support high-quality applied health research for the direct and primary benefit of people in low and middle income countries (LMICS) using Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding.

GHR supports areas of applied health research and training that are underfunded or where there is an unmet need. All funded NIHR Global Health Research must be:

  • Primarily and directly relevant to people living in low and middle income countries as identified on the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Development Assistance Committee list
  • Of the highest quality, delivered by outstanding research teams, and generate evidence that has strong potential for global impact.
  • Has the potential to reduce health inequalities.
