Health Innovation Challenge Fund

Back

The Health Innovation Challenge Fund (HIC) Fund is a strategic partnership between the Department of Health and the Wellcome Trust. The HIC Fund is a translational funding scheme to accelerate the development of a technology or intervention to the stage at which it is sufficiently attractive to follow-on funders or investors (or where possible uptake into the clinic).

Its objectives are to:

  • stimulate the development and uptake of innovative products, technologies and interventions for the benefit of patients in the NHS and other healthcare systems
  • support UK-led projects, which target unmet, or poorly met, healthcare needs
  • provide translational funding for projects that have demonstrated ‘proof-of-principle’ and have the potential for early clinical use or adoption
  • encourage the collaboration of companies, academia and clinicians to better confront today’s healthcare challenges.

The HIC Fund and the NIHR i4i Programme complement each other at a key translational gap. The HIC Fund can start earlier in the developmental pathway (reaching back into the pre-clinical studies) whereas i4i works to achieve a clinical impact in a shorter time frame, with delivery through and by the NHS.

HIC Fund supported in equal measure by the Department of Health and the Wellcome Trust.

Researchers funded by HIC Fund are members of the NIHR Faculty and are eligible to apply to become an NIHR Senior Investigator.
